Is There Going To Be A Fuel Strike

In a nutshell – no there is not going to be a fuel strike.

On March 26, UNITE (the trade Union representing seven fuel haulage companies) announced the results of a ballot of 2000 members into possible industrial action by tanker drivers. The dispute centred around safety concerns and job insecurity.

A number of fuel buyers (e.g. businesses and domestic consumers needing heating oil, kerosene, etc) were potentially impacted, although the majority of tanker drivers were not part of UNITE, and thus not part of the potential strike action. On the 11th May 2012 – the BBC reported: “A strike by fuel tanker drivers has been averted after they narrowly voted to accept a deal brokered during talks at the conciliation service Acas.” So, it looks like the dispute is now over, and there won’t be a tanker driver strike.
